10The Case for Statehood

Ever Closer Freedom

True independence means choosing a democratic partner, not an unaccountable bureaucracy.

Brexit was supposed to free Britain from unelected bureaucrats in Brussels. Yet we remain entangled - bound by EU regulations, subject to European Court rulings, and pressured to align with an institution that has never had democratic legitimacy. America offers what the EU never could: transparent, accountable, democratic governance.

The EU's Democratic Deficit

The European Commission - the EU's executive body - is unelected. The European Parliament cannot initiate legislation. The European Council meets behind closed doors. Decisions affecting 450 million people are made by officials no citizen voted for and no citizen can remove. This is not democracy - it is bureaucratic oligarchy dressed in democratic language.

Accountability to No One

When EU policies fail, who loses their job? No one. When regulations destroy industries, who faces the voters? No one. The EU has not had its accounts signed off by auditors for decades due to widespread irregularities. Billions disappear into structural funds with minimal oversight. In any normal organisation, this would be called what it is - institutional corruption on a continental scale.

"The EU offers rule by committee. America offers rule by the people."

Brexit Didn't Go Far Enough

Britain voted to leave, but the establishment ensured we never truly departed. The Windsor Framework keeps Northern Ireland under EU law. British courts still reference European judgments. Our regulations remain aligned because divergence is "too difficult." We have the worst of both worlds - outside the room where decisions are made, but still bound by them.

The American Alternative

The United States Congress is directly elected. The President faces voters every four years. Supreme Court decisions can be overturned by constitutional amendment. Every official, at every level, derives authority from the consent of the governed. When Americans are unhappy with their government, they can change it. The EU offers no such recourse.

What Statehood Means

As the 51st state, Britain would permanently and completely sever ties with the EU project. No more regulatory alignment. No more European Court jurisdiction. No more pressure to rejoin or associate. Instead, we would be full citizens of a genuine democracy - with representatives we elect, laws we can change, and a constitution that protects our rights.

The choice is clear: remain in the EU's orbit, subject to decisions made by people we cannot vote for and cannot remove - or join a democracy where every citizen has a voice. Britain deserves better than Brussels. America offers exactly that.
