08The Case for Statehood

Military Protection

Full protection under the world's most powerful military.

Britain already depends on America for its nuclear deterrent and strategic defence. We couldn't fight a major war without American support. Statehood would formalise what already exists-but with guaranteed protection rather than hopeful alliance.

The Current Reality

Britain's Trident nuclear submarines use American missiles. Our intelligence services are integrated with America's. NATO's security guarantee ultimately depends on American commitment. We maintain the appearance of independent defence while relying entirely on American power.

The Cost of Pretence

Britain spends over £50 billion annually on defence-much of it maintaining the fiction of independent capability. Two aircraft carriers we can barely crew. A shrinking army. Equipment procurement disasters. We pay for independence we don't actually have.

"Britain already relies on America for defence. Statehood would make that protection guaranteed rather than assumed."

What Statehood Means

As the 51st state, Britain would be protected by the full might of the US military-the world's most powerful armed forces by an enormous margin. An attack on Britain would be an attack on America. No ambiguity, no hoping allies honour their commitments.

Defence spending could be redirected to domestic priorities. The expensive pretence of independent military capability could end. Britain would be genuinely secure, not just performing security.
